Berit Anne, a CASTL affiliate and a member of both Tromsø Acquisition research group and DASAGO (North Sami child language research project) did a great interview on TV (NRK Nordnytt at 18:40 ) about the importance of focusing on child language in the revitalization of Sami. Tromsø Acquisition Research presented at forskning.no

Tromsø acquisition research on bilingualism was presented at forskning.no by Kristine Bentzen and Merete Anderssen. According to Bentzen and Anderssen, bilingual children have an awareness for language, earlier than monolingual children. And the sooner they start learning two languages, the better they become at acquiring both languages. Follow the link here for details (in Norwegian).

FRIHUM funding for Gillian

The project “Transitivity Alternations in Norwegian and English: Experimental Investigations” led by prof. Gillian Ramchand was one of four projects at HSL-fak that got funding from FRIHUM through the so-called “Fellesløftet”. “Fellesløftet” is a cooperation between UiT and the Ministry of Education that aims at increasing the funding for free project support (FRIPRO). Congratulations, Gillian!

Reward for dissemination in 2010

In the end of 2011 CASTL was granted 25.800 NOK from the faculty as a reward for dissemination of research results in 2010. Thanks to all of you who have contributed! It also shows that it is important to register all your work in CRISTIN.

Six new PhD positions at CASTL!

6 fully funded PhD positions in theoretical and/or experimental linguistics at CASTL are now advertized. The successful applicant will propose a research project that is compatible with ongoing work at CASTL in the areas of syntax, phonology or language acquisition. There will be two positions in each of the three subdisciplines (syntax, phonology, language acquisition). This distribution may be adjusted in case there are not enough suitable candidates in each of the subdisciplines.

This is an excellent opportunity to study at one of the world’s premier graduate schools in generative linguistics while experiencing Tromsø’s unique environment! The deadline is March 7th, and the full announcement is here.

Minjeong returns to CASTL

CASTL gets yet another Higher Executive Officer. From Monday February 13 and throughout 2012 Minjeong Son is hired in a 40% position in the CASTL administration. Like her predecessors, Minjeong will be in charge of the CASTL website and blog. She will also help organize workshops and conferences, book hotel rooms for guest researchers, help out with travel reimbursements and help making the Annual Report. Minjeong will spend two days a week on administrative work for CASTL. She will also be teaching linguistics for IS this semester.

Acquisition group goes to Hønefoss

This week (January 11-13) several members of the acquisition group goes to Klækken (Hønefoss) to attend a network seminar for the NorPhLex network (Phonological and lexical acquisition in mono- and bilingual children in the Nordic and the Baltic states). Violeta goes to Germany and the US

Violeta Martínez-Parício will give a talk in Leipzig this Friday, 6th of January. The conference is ConSOLE, and the title of the talk is: Exploring the trigger of a morphophonological innovation. Identity effects in Uruguayan Spanish.

At the end of the January Violeta goes to America for a semester to be a guest researcher at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
